CONTEMPORARY ART CLASS

Description and Major Units of Study

This course is designed to introduce students to basic understanding of 21st century

modern art.
This class is geared to the beginning art student that will gain knowledge

in art techniques, processes, and interpretations of artwork. The student will be able

to create their own original works of art by using the elements of art and the

principles of design as their basis. With this knowledge combined with a wide variety

of materials, students will leave Contemporary art with an insight to the current art

world that surrounds them.

SYLLABUS

PROJECT #1  PORTFOLIO DESIGN – YOU

WILL CREATE A TAG NAME FOR YOURSELF

AND DESIGN YOUR OWN LOGO TO GO

WITH IT. YOUR NAME MAY BE YOUR ENTIRE

DESIGN OR SIGNATURE. THE FONT MUST

PRESENT THE NAME AND YOU MUST USE

ONE ELEMENT OF ART THAT WILL ENHANCE

YOUR DESIGN.

PROJECT #2
  ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM:
YOU WILL BE CREATING


YOUR OWN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM PAINTING BY USING ONLY SHAPES, COLORS, AND LINES. A STATEMENT

WILL BE INCLUDED ON THE PROCESS YOU TOOK TO CREATE YOUR WORK OF ART.

POP ART PRINTS
– YOU WILL BE CREATING YOUR OWN POP ART COLLAGE (ALONG WITH MAKING

A STENCIL TO CREATE A PRINT) YOUR DESIGN WILL BECOME AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR A POPULAR PRODUCT

OR PERSON. COLLAGE WILL IMAGES WITH COMMON DESIGN ELEMENTS SUCH AS COLOR, LINE, TEXTURE,

SHAPE, AND PATTERNS.


PROJECT #4
LOWBROW ART MOVEMENT
– YOU WILL CREATE A SURREAL (IMAGINARY, DREAMLIKE) COLORFUL

CHARACTER THAT IS HUMOROUS, FUNNY, OR SPOOKY THAT DOES NOT FOLLOW THE CONVENTIONAL

ARTISTIC WAYS. (ELEMENTS OF ART)


PROJECT #5
FIGURATION LIBRE/FIGURATIVE GRAFFITI-
YOU WILL BE STUDYING THE ARTIST OF THIS

MOVEMENT INCLUDING: KEITH HARING, JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT, HUGO KAAGMAN AND CREATING A WORK OF

ART THAT HAS A SOCIAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL MESSAGE.


 PROJECT #6 SUPERFLAT/ KAIKAI KIKI - YOU WILL BE CREATING YOUR OWN SUPERHERO OR FAIRYTALE THAT

WILL BE INSPIRED BY THIS CONTEMPORARY ART MOVEMENT.


PROJECT #7
MAIL ART
- BASED ON THE WORKS OF THE “FATHER OF MAIL ART”, RAY JOHNSON, YOU WILL BE

CREATING A PIECE OF ART THAT CAN BE REPRESENTED AS A STAMP. EACH PIECE WILL BE SOMETHING

REPRESENTING YOU WHICH COULD INCLUDE A SYMBOL, TEXT, COLLAGE, ABSRACT DESIGNS, AND MUST BE

SPECIAL AND EASILY RECOGNIZED.


ARTIST PROJECT
:
STUDENTS MUST PICK AN ARTIST FROM THE GENRE GIVEN, SUCH AS POP ART. THEY WILL BE

DOING A PRESENTATION ON THAT ARTIST’S LIFE AND ARTWORK. MUST INCLUDE PICTURES WITH AND 10

SLIDES. DETAILS TO COME.
